Attics and Basements An attic is a space found directly below the pitched roof of a house or building. Since the attic fills the space between the ceiling of the top floor of a building and the slanted roof, it is generally an awkwardly shaped space with exposed rafters and difficult-to-access corners. Sometimes, attics are turned into bedrooms or home offices, with windows and staircases built to facilitate staying in and accessing to them, but in many cases, attics remain hard to get to and neglected, and are typically used for storage.
The basement is formed by one, or sometimes more, floors of a building which are located partially or totally below the ground. They are generally used as utility spaces, where items like the furnace, air conditioning and water heater are located. In some cases basements can also be turned into home gyms or playrooms.
